{"id":7235,"date":"2016-09-18T16:19:18","date_gmt":"2016-09-18T08:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nurulizzah.com\/site\/?p=7235"},"modified":"2020-02-18T12:27:29","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T04:27:29","slug":"joint-letter-calling-for-release-of-nguyen-van-dai-vietnamese-human-rights-lawyer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nurulizzah.com\/site\/joint-letter-calling-for-release-of-nguyen-van-dai-vietnamese-human-rights-lawyer\/","title":{"rendered":"Joint Letter Calling for Release of Nguyen Van Dai, Vietnamese Human Rights lawyer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nurulizzah.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/VETO-CaseReport_E1-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7236 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nurulizzah.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/VETO-CaseReport_E1-2-300x250.jpg\" alt=\"veto-casereport_e1-2\" width=\"372\" height=\"355\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>His Excellency Nguy\u1ec5n Xu\u00e2n Ph\u00fac<br \/>\nPrime Minister<br \/>\nSocialist Republic of Vietnam<br \/>\nHanoi, Vietnam<\/p>\n<p>XX September 2016<\/p>\n<p>Dear Prime Minister Ph\u00fac,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We the undersigned parliamentarians are writing to express our concern about the current situation and wellbeing of Vietnamese citizens Nguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n \u0110\u00e0i and L\u00ea Thu H\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lawyer Nguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n \u0110\u00e0i was arrested in Hanoi on 16 December 2015 on the charge of \u201cconducting propaganda against the State\u201d (Article 88 of the Penal Code). At the time of his arrest, Dai was preparing for a meeting with members of the European Union delegation who were in Hanoi for the annual human rights dialogue with Vietnam. After his arrest, officers from the Ministry of Public Security searched his home and confiscated a number of computers, laptops, cell phones, hard disks, USB sticks and documents. On the same day, Ms. L\u00ea Thu H\u00e0, \u0110\u00e0i\u2019s assistant, was also arrested in his office in Hanoi. If convicted, Dai and Ha could face up to twenty years in prison.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u0110\u00e0i\u2019s supporters believe that the charges against \u0110\u00e0i relate to his work as a human rights defender, trainer and activist. For over 15 years \u0110\u00e0i has offered pro bono legal advice to vulnerable social groups and trained communities on their rights according to the Vietnamese Constitution and the international treaties that Vietnam has signed or ratified.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We understand that Nguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n \u0110\u00e0i and L\u00ea Thu H\u00e0 are currently in detention, awaiting trial.
