The ‘1Malaysia’ Pose

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

I reiterate:

I am a firm believer that one must walk one’s tweet/rhetoric/motto/etc
Previous to FT Minister’s request for my 1 Msia sign, he made a thinly veiled attack against opposition leaders as ‘instigators’ (penghasut).
Hence it just wasnt in the spirit of 1 Malaysianess, and it made the entire 1 Malaysia cry (kindly suggested by RTM”s videographer) a little empty and hollow.

Discrepancy of Crime Statistics in Brickfields

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

In October last year, I had raised the discrepancy of the crime statistics for Brickfields announced by the KL Deputy OCPD, Datuk Abdul Samah Mat (Bernama, 23 June 2008), which stated a reduction of 19.4% compared to only 7% declared by the Brickfields Deputy OCPD, Supt Azri Abdul Rahman, (Utusan Malaysia, 25 June 2008) from the month of January to May 2008.
I raised this issue in Parliament, and the then Deputy Home Minister, Datuk Chor Chee Heung, did not give me any answer.
I raise the same issue again this session, and today, in a written answer, much to my surprise, the Home Minister traced the discrepancy to a misreporting done by Bernama in the statement issued on 23 June 2008.
The public deserves an explanation for this, and if indeed a misreporting had occurred, Bernama needs to acknowledge it and carry out a retraction.
We do not want this to be another case of finger pointing between a Ministry and the press, when the crux of the matter is a blatant attempt by the police to deceive the public.

Dialogue with Bangsar residents

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

On Sunday, 10th of May 2009, I had a dialogue session with Bangsarians. The meeting was organized by the Bangsar Baru Business Council, where its President, Mr. Ronnie Q moderated the event. More than 200 residents turned up for the event which was held at the Bangsar Sports Complex. Residents voiced their opinions on the troubles that they are facing to me and also took their time to hear me out on various issues and what I have done so far to help improve their standard of living. 276

Among issues raised were:

  1. The open space issue where currently a used-car-dealership now sits
  2. The excessive crow population that is now starting to become a manace
  3. DBKL troubles (lacking in speed, efficiency and transparency)
  4. The need to bring back local council elections
  5. Alam Flora troubles (non-collection/slow collection of refuse)
  6. Illegal jockeys at Jalan Telawi
  7. Other issues

Some of the issues brought forth have been tackled by my office, I’ll attach the links on the responses DBKL has given me soon.

Below are some pictures of the event:

Media coverage on crime in Bangsar

Friday, February 20th, 2009

From The Malay Mail, 21 January 2009 (http://www.mmail.com.my/Bangsar_unsafe,_say_residents.aspx)

Wan Abdul Bari: Police will step up patrols in the Bangsar and Brickfields during the festive seasonResidents are up in arms over the alarming crime trend in the Bangsar neighbourhood.

Following the brutal attack on 64-year-old Croatian lecturer Dr Andelko Simic on Monday, residents want the situation to improve quickly.

Bukit Bandaraya Residents’Association (RA) deputy president Mumtaz Ali said: “It is disturbing that crime is now so rampant.”

“Day by day, it’s getting worse. I recently met with Brickfields district police chief and proposed that police mount constant patrols, even plainclothes policemen. Also, roadblocks must be put up often — even if these cause traffic inconvenience. He told me police would work on it,” he said, adding that members of the public should inform police of suspected crimes.

Mumtaz said he had asked the Kuala Lumpur mayor last May to improve on streetlights, closed-circuit television cameras, strategically placed mirrors and guard rails.

Bangsar Baru RA president Datuk George Joseph said: association has noticed that crime has become more rampant.

“Between September and Decembe last year, there were many cases where weapons like parang were used in snatch thefts. We’ve had break-ins and even arson. It has become extremely frightening,” he said, adding that he has spoken to the Brickfields police chief as well.

“I think police must be seen, not just patrolling the streets just for the sake of their work. We need some real commitment from them. We actually want them to come and give talks and teach us,” said Joseph, adding that he was waiting for City Hall and residents’ support and approval to make Bangsar Baru a gated community.

Medan Damansara RA secretary Peter Raiappan expressed shock that the most recent case involved the burning of two cars.

BLOODBATH: HELP University College cleaners washing away the blood stains from Monday night's brutal attack on lecturer Dr Andelko Simic in Bangsar“Crime is taking on a new dimension. This was a coordinated attack. The question is, what are the authorities doing? Bangsar has become a hotspot, crime is becoming more violent as people are becoming more desperate. This is very frightening,” said Raiappan, who is also asking when CCTVs would be installed.

“What City Hall can do is to provide subsidy to harness the RAs and encourage them to undertake private security patrols. I don’t think police can ever provide enough security to satisfy the public, as manpower is very limited. So this may be the way,” he said.

Brickfields district police chief ACP Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said police would step up patrol activities in Bangsar and Brickfields during the festive season.

“The statistics for 2007 and 2008 show there was a decrease in crime,” he said, confirming that a police report was made by his officers on the attack on Simic and another report was lodged yesterday at the Brickfields police station by Simic’s colleague.

“We have yet to speak to the victim, and will wait for his condition to be stabilised,” he said.

He brushed off neighbours’ claims that police arrived late and said an internal investigation revealed that response was within the promised 15 minutes.

He advised that calls be made to the 24-hour Brickfields operations room at 03-22744465 for cases taking place in the Brickfields district as calls to 999 would usually take time to be re-routed to appropriate stations.
