MEDIA STATEMENT BY NURUL IZZAH ANWAR, 17TH OF MARCH 2015

By 17 March, 2015February 5th, 2021No Comments

By the grace of Allah, I wish to convey my biggest thanks to the Pakatan leaders, NGOs and the Rakyat for the overwhelming show of support for Freedom and Democracy. There is no words that can accurately describe my appreciation for the concern that was shown for my well being after I was arrested yesterday under the Sedition Act.

I am humbled that our voice for the rakyat can still be heard even if the authoritarian government is:

Firstly, in contempt of the courts by using provisions of the Peaceful Assembly Act Section 9 (5) that has been found unconstitutional by the courts; and

Secondly, in contempt of Parliament by using the draconian Sedition Act on a Member of Parliament for a speech in the Parliament. This is against the Parliamentary immunity, as conferred by Article 63(2) of the Federal Constitution.

I wish to also like to thank the media, local and International for the coverage of this blatant abuse of power by the government by using the Police to silence their critics.

We are more determined than ever to fight against the injustice and flagrant attack on democracy. I would like to stress that this incident is a clear sign the government is desperate, and is resorting to cowardly tactics to intimidate the opposition.

We must also be mindful of other activists that continue to be remanded and victimized in the ongoing sedition dragnet; and we continue to await with anticipation Adam Adli and Mandeep Singh’s immediate release.

I maintain that my arrest and detention was completely unnecessary, malicious, unlawful and an assault on the institution of Parliament. I will be discussing with my lawyers legal recourse for the unlawful arrest and detention that I was subjected to.

My arrest confirms what we have maintained all this while:

Anwar Ibrahim is Malaysia’s No.1 Political Prisoner; and hidden intentions to make me a Political Prisoner to further consolidate power in the ruling elite.

Undeterred,
Pakatan Rakyat shall move to censure the IGP under Section 7 of the Houses Of Parliament/ Act 347 (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952 – a move that is hoped to inculcate an understanding in Malaysia’s top cop on the concept of separation of powers in this country. We must reaffirm our Federal Constitution and Separation of Powers Principle by sanctioning the Police for contempt of court in both going against the court’s decision in the ongoing investigations under Peaceful Assembly Act Section 9 (5) as well as Section 7 Act 347.

Lawan tetap Lawan!
