KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 5): PKR lawmaker Nurul Izzah Anwar has questioned the government on the lack of disciplinary action taken against irresponsible and errant civil servants every time the Auditor General’s Report is published.

Speaking to the press at the side-lines of her second Free Legal Aid Camp at Bangsar today, the Lembah Pantai MP voiced her concern and disappointment that no one has been made responsible on the continued waste of government funds.

“What we want is action to be taken, starting with the minister. If the minister can get away scot-free, what about the other officers? How will they think?

“If abuse of power was found, those responsible should resign or have disciplinary action taken against them.

“In Japan, any minister caught in a scandal will willingly step down. That’s what we must do,” she said.

Nurul Izzah said only if authorities like the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission take appropriate action would there be fear among wrongdoers.

“It is strange that the MACC can say that there’s nothing wrong even if the price item is 10 times the market value simply because an open tender process was conducted,” she added.

Touching on her Free Legal Aid Camp, the PKR vice-president said that this was the second time she has conducted it, with the first being at her own service centre.

“Last time we helped around 30 people. The idea of this camp is to assist the retirees and anyone else who needs free legal advice from our panel of pro bono lawyers. We have four lawyers attending to those who need help.

“We normally conduct this together with our health camp where we find doctors to assist in giving free medical assistance. But this is the first time we are conducting it in an open space, that way a lot more people will be aware of the service that we provide,” she said.

Nurul Izzah also shared her grievances over “uncooperative” or “unfriendly” actions by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the police.

“This is apolitical; we’re just doing this for the people of this constituency and anyone else who need help. It’s a service for the rakyat and yet it was so difficult for us to get a permit.

Earlier, there were DBKL officers taking photos of us… It seems that they see us as a threat,” she said.
